Arrival and Departure Procedures

  1. Please be prompt when bringing and picking up your children.
  2. Be sure your child's presence is recorded when arriving and sign out your child when leaving.
  3. Preschool drivers must use the main parking lots, (the space behind the Church is for church use only).
  4. Never leave children in an unattended car.
  5. Cell phone may not be used while car is in motion in the parking lot.

3 Year Old Program:

  1. During the months of September and October, when arriving at school parents should park and bring their children to the classroom where they will be greeted by their teachers. Beginning in November, parents should park and bring their children to the playground where their teachers will greet them. In inclement weather, children should be brought directly to the classroom.
  2. When returning at pick up time, parents should park and come directly to the classroom to receive their children.

4 Year Old & Pre-K Program:

  1. All children should be dropped off and picked up according to the procedure specified for their class.
  2. Car pools may be arranged at the orientation meeting. Car pool drivers should be listed on the appropriate children's Emergency Cards.

Child Protection Law

Mayflower Preschool staff are required to give an oral report to the Department of Social Services of any suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with the Child Protection Law Act No. 238.

Clothing

Parents are encouraged to dress children appropriately for school activities. Names must be clearly visible on all outer clothing.

Classroom Management

Each child at Mayflower Preschool is a valued and integral part of the program. It is our intent to preserve each child's dignity and self-esteem yet provide a safe atmosphere where each child can feel secure. Should a child engage in inappropriate behavior, staff dealing with the situation shall:

  1. Attempt to involve the child in problem-solving and offer choices.
  2. Encourage the child to be in touch with his/her own feelings and find an appropriate way to manage those feelings.
  3. Separate the child from classmates when necessary.
  4. Involve the parents when necessary.
  5. At no time will physical punishment be used.

Dismissal

Children demonstrating excessive disruptive behavior, preventing others from benefiting from the program and/or those requiring inordinate individual attention, may be dismissed. Prior to dismissal the following review procedure will be followed:

  1. Personal contacts between parent and teacher including: parental notification of the problem; one or more meetings to develop an appropriate resolution of the problem; and parent observation of the child in the classroom.
  2. At a meeting of staff and parents, discuss the possible use of outside resources. Observation of the child in the classroom.
  3. Following efforts to resolve the problems, if they persist, a child will be dismissed upon the recommendations of the teachers in consultation with director.

Enrollment Policy

Early Enrollment: During the second week after school resumes in January, enrollment for the coming fall is opened to...

  • Families with children currently enrolled in the program.
  • Children and grandchildren of Church members.

Alumni Enrollment: New this year! For those families that have attended Mayflower in the past and have a gap in the age of their children. Enrollment is after early enrollment but before open enrollment.

  • Open Enrollment: During the second week in January, enrollment is opened to the community.
  1. Dates of enrollment will be published and Enrollment Brochures distributed prior to the beginning of enrollment.
  2. Based on the public guidelines, children in the 3's and 4's classes must attain their class age by December 1 of the current year. Children in the Pre-K class should be 5 by March 1 of the current year.
  3. Children may not be enrolled in more than one class at a time at Mayflower Preschool.
  4. Children who are enrolled for the following school year but are withdrawn on or before July 1st, will be refunded 1/2 of the first month's prepaid tuition.
  5. A child who has been withdrawn and wishes to return will have their name placed on a waiting list unless an opening exists in the class.

Field Trips (4 Year Old & Pre-K Programs)

  1. All Mayflower Preschool students participating in school-sponsored field trips are required to be in booster seats, or other approved car seats as per the American academy of Pediatrics recommendations.
  2. Parents are responsible for properly installing the car seat/booster seat in the car of the assigned driver. Each car seat/booster seat must have the child's name on it.
  3. Volunteer drivers must sign a volunteer vehicle Operator's form for each Field Trip and be cleared through a criminal history check (ICHAT).
  4. Volunteer drivers must carry a First Aid kit for each car and a Child Information Record card with emergency information for each child in the car.
  5. Only parents and guardians of Mayflower students are permitted to drive on field trips. Grandparents, other family members and baby sitters/nannies are no allowed to drive on field trips.
  6. Field trips are budgeted to cover only chaperoned drivers. A parent who wishes to drive only his/her child must pay his/her own way.
  7. Siblings are not allowed on field trips.
  8. Teachers will organize field trips. Parents are asked to respect decisions made by teachers regarding placement of children with assigned drivers.
  9. Teachers will attempt, when possible, to display driver and student assignments on the class day prior to the field trip so parents can make contact with drivers to discuss car seat/booster seat issues.
  10. Field trips will be limited to 2-3 per school year.

Illness and Contagious Disease

Mayflower Preschool adheres to State and County guidelines for infectious disease control. Parents are asked to contact the school if their child contracts an infectious disease (such as chicken pox), or if he/she will be absent for a long period of time. Children may not attend school if they have a fever, bad cough, or excessive runny nose. children should remain at home following an illness until they are fully able to participate in the entire program, including outdoor play.

Insurance

Students should be covered by their parents' health insurance policy.

Medication

Medication is administered to children only with prior written permission from the parent. Prescription medication must have the pharmacy label indicating the physician's name, child's name, and instructions for administering the medication. Written records are kept of medication given to children. Medication brought to school will be stored out of reach of all children in the program.

Outdoor Play

The children will have outdoor play whenever weather permits. They should be dressed appropriately. They will not play outside if the outside temperature is 15 degrees or below.

School Bags

Children new to Mayflower's program will be given a school bag for transporting art work and notices to and from school. Names must be clearly visible on school bags. replacement bags may be purchased.

School Pictures

School pictures will be taken in October. Specific information will be sent home at that time.

Student Information and Records

  1. Office files are kept for each child containing a Health Form, any necessary medical information, a signed contract and a Parent Awareness Form. These forms may be released upon parent request. Emergency Information cards are kept in the Preschool office and in the classroom.
  2. No information on any individual student, whether written or not, is provided to any third-party except upon the consent of a parent.
  3. When kindergarten readiness forms of receiving schools are completed by the child's teachers, they should be discussed with the child's parents before being sent to the appropriate school. A copy of the completed form is available to parents upon request.

Toilet Training

Mayflower Preschool asks that a child be toilet trained to participate in the program. Teachers will not assume responsibility for diapering during class.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Vision and hearing screening is conducted annually by the Kent County Health department.
